1. Justin Herbert, Chargers

The Chargers were right to try to secure an upgrade over Tyrod Taylor in this year’s draft. Unfortunately, they chose the wrong quarterback to get the job done.

Herbert just isn’t good enough to be a top 10 selection. Quarterbacks always rise in the draft, but Herbert has the tape of a guy who should’ve been a late first round pick at best.

The size, speed, and big arm are all attractive qualities for the Chargers to work with. His questionable technique and lack of accuracy with the football make him a boom or bust prospect. That isn’t something that should be said about a prospect that goes No. 6 overall.

The better choice for Los Angeles would have been to focus on taking the best player available regardless of position. Instead, they gambled on one of the most polarizing prospects in this year’s draft class. Again, that’s just not something that a team should do with a top 10 selection.

If Herbert blossoms into an above-average starter then the gamble will pay off for the Chargers. The odds favor him washing out and becoming a high-profile bust. This front office has made a lot of savvy moves over the years, but Herbert is going to go down as a real black mark on Tom Telesco’s record.
