Every NFL team spends a ton of time and energy on preparing for the draft. All that effort really paid off for these five teams.

NFL free agency is fun, but the best organizations in the league know they need to build through the draft. That’s the best way for teams to acquire talent that fits well into their respective salary cap structures.

The most important picks are made in the first couple rounds, but real gems can be uncovered on Day Three as well. The following five teams did the best job of putting together talented classes from top to bottom.

5. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts deserve extra credit for landing a spot on this list despite not having a first round selection to work with. The heavy lifting the franchise did in the second round powered them to the No. 5 spot on the list.

Michael Pittman would have been a first round pick at wide receiver in a lot of drafts. The depth in this year’s class pushed him down into Round 2. He will give the Colts a big-bodied wideout capable of winning aerial battles down the field as a rookie. In subsequent years, he could add enough refinement to his game to develop into the team’s No. 1 wide receiver.

Jonathan Taylor is going to give the team even more production from the running back position. He’s perfectly suited for the physical ground game the Colts like to employ. Don’t be surprised if he puts Marlon Mack on the bench early in his career. He should develop into a 1,000+ yard rusher in this offensive system right away.

If Taylor figures out how to become a quality receiver then he has a chance to develop into a perennial All-Pro.

The Colts also stopped Jacob Eason’s slide down by scooping him up in Round 4. He’s got the arm strength to grow into a really good starter in the right system. Sitting behind Philip Rivers is the best option for a talented, but relatively raw quarterback prospect.

Don’t rule out fifth round pick Danny Pinter’s chances of making an impact. He played at tackle at Ball State but will kick inside at guard for the Colts. He’s a really good fit for the team’s power run game. The depth of this class is going to help Indianapolis stay in the hunt for a Super Bowl title.
