6. Los Angeles Chargers

Draft Class

  • 1st round-QB Justin Herbert (Oregon), ILB Kenneth Murray (Oklahoma)
  • 4th round-RB Joshua Kelley (UCLA)
  • 5th round-WR Joe Reed (Virginia)
  • 6th round-S Alohi Gilman (Notre Dame)
  • 7th round-WR K.J. Hill (Ohio State)

The Los Angeles Chargers needed to come out of this draft with a franchise quarterback and they got the job done. Taking Justin Herbert out of Oregon with the sixth overall pick was tremendous, giving the Chargers the heir to Philip Rivers under center.

Tyrod Taylor may start right now for the Chargers, but Herbert has all the tools to succeed in the NFL right now. Herbert may have been the top overall pick if he came out as a junior, and his rocket arm should allow him to hit Keenan Allen and Mike Williams down the field with ease.

The Chargers also pulled off a shrewd trade to get back into the first round and select Kenneth Murray to be the leader of their defense. Murray was a highly productive linebacker at Oklahoma who was undervalued due to his position, but he can man the middle of the defense in Los Angeles for a long time.

One pick that has flown under the radar is Joshua Kelley, the Chargers’ fourth-round choice out of UCLA. Kelley should pair nicely with Austin Ekeler to give Los Angeles a loaded backfield, which will help Herbert ease into the lineup.
