2021 NFL Draft Big Board: Trevor Lawrence, Penei Sewell, Ja’Marr Chase headline class
The 2020 NFL Draft class at offensive tackle was pretty strong with five picked in the top 18 picks and six in the first round. None was as good as Sewell. The rising junior would have been a top-five pick this year if eligible. Thankfully, for Ducks fans, they get him for one more year before he’ll be a top pick.
The 6-foot-5-335-pound Sewell is a dominating run blocker and a dominating pass blocker. He moves like a tight end but is built like a vending machine. He’s a mauler with incredible strength but the quick feet to handle speedy edge rushers and advance to the second level and take on linebackers and players charging downhill from the secondary.
Sewell’s best game last year came vs. Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game when he helped pace the way for 239 yards and 5.8 yards per carry against one of the top defenses in the nation. That defense just had three defensive linemen drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Sewell was undaunted. It was just another game.
He comes from a football family where his dad was a high school coach in American Samoa before the family relocated to Utah, his two older brothers play(ed) at Utah State, and his youngest brother, Noah, is a five-star linebacker signee with Oregon.
Sewell might be the best offensive tackle prospect since Joe Thomas. He’s going to get Heisman votes this year. It’s early in the process still, but the same lofty expectations on Lawrence apply to Sewell who could carry a similar draft grade as Hall of Famers Walter Jones, Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogden and Tony Boselli from the Golden Age of 90s tackles.
