Nevada: Pat Garrity had fewer opportunities than Greg Anthony

Greg Anthony was a member of the transcending UNLV Runnin’ Rebels championship squad that made headlines across the country. Pat Garrity played very well for the independent school named Notre Dame, then played just as well as Notre Dame entered the Big East for three losing seasons.

Anthony is arguably the best player who has won just a single individual accolade when he was selected to the All-Region team. Garrity shared an All-American second team with Vince Carter who was also unable to take the first-team selection from Raef LaFrentz or Antawn Jamison.

For their careers, Garrity would outscore Anthony 19 points to 12.5, outrebound him seven to three. Anthony would average an impressive seven assists to Garrity’s two, but Garrity would shoot better from the field and free-throw line. Anthony’s stats would remain consistent in the tournament, highlighted by the seven assists and two steals. Garrity was sold short on a couple of fronts: first Garrity never got the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament and never had the opportunity to play with a team that was half as talented as Anthony did.

Garrity’s field goal percentage was better than Anthony’s, the number of field goals attempted surpassed Anthony by an average of four per game, which would account for the higher scoring production. The selection here is give and take, and I feel I have given others with Anthony’s achievements the nod, but here I am taking Garrity.
