Best Nebraska football players: Modern-era Mount Rushmore
In terms of the statistics, it’s fair to say Tommie Frazier doesn’t stack up to the other great quarterbacks that have stood at the helm of the Cornhuskers. Throughout his four-year career, he never threw for more than 1,362 yards in a season and had a single-season high of 17 passing touchdowns, though he did average nearly 500 rushing yards and nine rushing scores per season.
That continues when you look at the all-time ranks. Frazier ranks just ninth all-time in career passing yards, fifth all-time in career passing touchdowns and sixth all-time in rushing touchdowns. And while those are all impressive, they just aren’t at the level of others. Yet there’s no one arguing with his placement on the Nebraska football Mount Rushmore.
Frazier helmed and led the charge for the single most dominant run in the history of the Cornhuskers. The quarterback was under center as he led Nebraska football to two straight National Championships, one of only five players to ever do so. He also led the team to three straight title games and was the MVP in each contest.
Furthermore, Frazier was front and center for “The Run” in the 1995 title game against Florida, helping Nebraska clinch the victory and cement the legacy of one of the greatest teams in the history of college football. Who cares about the numbers — they aren’t the end-all for greatness. And though Frazier had plenty of numbers, his greatness goes beyond them.
