NCAA basketball: 25 best college basketball teams of all time
4. 1967-1968 UCLA Bruins
The UCLA Bruins are well-represented on this countdown, having a list-high four teams in the 25 greatest college basketball squads of all time. The teams span the Wooden dynasty, including the 1967-68 edition of UCLA.
That team featured the greatest player to ever wear UCLA blue, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Known as Lew Alcindor back then, Abdul-Jabbar was the dominant force of that team, winning National Player of the Year honors in 1968.
The Bruins also took part in the “Game of the Century” that season, losing by two to the Houston Cougars at the Astrodome. That would be the only game UCLA would lose all season as they rolled through the Pac-8 with a perfect 14-0 record.
The defending national champions made quick work of most of their opponents in the NCAA Tournament, surviving an early scare against New Mexico State before cruising to a championship. The highlight of the year for the Bruins was a rematch with Houston in the Final Four, which UCLA won handily in a 101-69 rout.
The championship was the third for John Wooden and the second of three for Abdul-Jabbar, who won the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player award in each title run. If they didn’t lose at Houston during the regular season this Bruins’ team would be a strong contender for the top spot.
