NCAA basketball: 25 best college basketball teams of all time
2. 1975-1976 Indiana Hoosiers
We go from the first team to go undefeated and win it all to the last to do it. College basketball hasn’t seen an undefeated champion in over 40 years, with the last to do it being the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers.
That team was the finest ever put together by legendary coach Bob Knight, who was in his fifth year at the helm. Indiana had gotten off to a 30-0 start the previous season before falling to Kentucky in the Elite Eight, so there was plenty of motivation for the Hoosiers to finish the job this time.
With pretty much the entire team back the Hoosiers began the year as the no. 1 ranked team in the preseason polls, adding lofty expectations to the season. Indiana was undeterred, setting an early tone by blowing out the defending national champions, UCLA, by 20 points in the first game of the season.
A 27-0 regular season meant that the Hoosiers had extreme confidence entering the NCAA Tournament, where they won their first three games to get to the Final Four. The Hoosiers knocked off UCLA there to officially end the Bruins’ dynasty before taking down conference rival Michigan to win it all.
Six teams have gone through the regular season undefeated since Indiana’s 1976 squad did, but none have been able to go all the way to a championship. That streak alone showcases why the Hoosiers should be right near the top of the list of our greatest college basketball teams of all time.
