2021 NFL Draft: 5 teams that are perfect fits for Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence
By John Buhler
Ben Roethlisberger isn’t going to play forever, but we can’t rule it out yet with Lawrence. He looks like a Greek god, so maybe he is one? Either way, we have to believe the Steelers would love to transition from Big Ben to Sunshine at quarterback in the next few years. The City of Champions will be well on its way to Lombardi Trophy No. 7. There will be no cloudy days in Pittsburgh.
Lawrence has the arm strength to dominate in the cold AFC North climate. He could be the fourth Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback to start in that division in 2021, joining Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns and Joe Burrow now of the Cincinnati Bengals. Of course, the Steelers need to miss the playoffs to get him, but let’s dream.
Pittsburgh did not draft Roethlisberger’s successor in 2020. A player like Jalen Hurts might have been the guy for them on Day 2, but he was gobbled up in the second round by the in-state rival Philadelphia Eagles. It might be Roethlisberger’s team next year, but the Steelers shouldn’t feel the least bit confident about handing the reigns over the Mason Rudolph or Devlin Hodges.
It was a long, often painful two decades between Terry Bradshaw’s retirement and Big Ben’s arrival. The Steelers had their moments under Bill Cowher in the 1990s and the latter years under Chuck Noll, but to effectively pivot of Roethlisberger to Lawrence would be a Western PA fever dream. How do yinz feel about that?
