2021 NFL Draft: 5 teams that are perfect fits for Ohio State’s Justin Fields
By John Buhler
Ohio State’s Justin Fields is a projected first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and these five NFL teams are perfect fits for the Buckeyes quarterback.
There are two A-plus franchise quarterbacks poised to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence is expected to go No. 1 overall, touted as arguably the best quarterback prospect since John Elway went out of Stanford back in 1983. The other guy of note to watch is Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields, and he’s every bit as good as Lawrence.
Fields was a Heisman Trophy finalist last year in his first season with the Buckeyes. The Kennesaw, Georgia native played his first college season backing up Jake Fromm with the Georgia Bulldogs before transferring. Like Lawrence, who is also from Georgia, Fields reached the College Football Playoff last season. His Buckeyes are expected to face Clemson for the national title.
While Lawrence has the bigger frame and the more powerful right arm, Fields is more mobile, more accurate of a passer and every bit as dynamic as the guy he’ll always be compared to. If these two signal-callers don’t go 1-2 in the 2021 NFL Draft, someone messed up during the 2020 college football season. So who would we like to see Fields play for beginning in 2021?
Here are the five NFL teams we’d love to see Fields become a superstar franchise quarterback for.
Drew Brees is bound for the NBC Sports broadcasting booth at some point. Even though they have four quarterbacks on their roster, the Saints will need someone who doesn’t throw 30 picks in a season, play on special teams or came to them in the seventh round. What they need is the best quarterback The Ohio State University has ever seen.
Though folks back in Atlanta aren’t going to be overly thrilled with this, Fields would be the perfect successor to Drews in the Big Easy. The accuracy and the student mentality he has for the game will extend Sean Payton‘s illustrious coaching career for however long he desires. Of course, this is a total pipe dream because the Saints won’t be picking anywhere close to the top 10.
While it remains to be seen if the Saints do get back to one last Super Bowl before Brees retires, it’d be shocking if New Orleans doesn’t at least reach the NFC playoffs next year as a Wild Card team. In short, they’d have to give up the farm to be in a position to draft a budding superstar like Fields inside of the top three. Would general manager Mickey Loomis pull the trigger?
Again, this is not a likely scenario for Fields in the slightest. He’ll be off the board hours before the Saints are even on the clock with their first round pick. Frankly, the only way the Saints will be in a position to draft him is if they have a season from hell or Loomis mortgages the franchise’s entire future to land him. It’s not happening, but it would be cool to see him replace Brees in NOLA.
