North Carolina basketball head coach Roy Williams has spent his time in isolation growing an uncharacteristic but absolutely perfect quarantine beard.
When patrolling the sidelines in Chapel Hill, North Carolina basketball head coach Roy Williams is often clean-cut and dressed to the nines in suits that every Tar Heels fan is envious of. But amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Williams has shed that look for something a bit more rugged.
As most people are during the isolation and quarantine from the COVID-19 outbreak, Williams appears to be dealing with the struggles in his own way. Namely, the most-often clean-shaven head coach has taken to sporting an admittedly fantastic salt-and-pepper beard.
Williams unveiled the new look on Twitter during a post about teacher appreciation:
Thank you ... for all that you do each and every day!

The Tar Heels are coming off of bar-none their worst season since Roy Williams took over the team in the 2002-03 season. North Carolina finished with just a 14-19 overall record and tied for last in the ACC after going 6-14 in the conference. To make matters worse, they were actually eliminated from the ACC Tournament prior to all postseason play being canceled due to the pandemic.
Even if there wasn’t a quarantine in place in North Carolina, there’s at least a chance that Williams would’ve grown this beard as a way of mourning what transpired with his team in the 2019-20 season. If Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s that any man struggling needs to grow a beard to get through them.
But the bigger question is whether Williams will keep sporting the look once the time to quarantine has passed. There’s no arguing that the Tar Heels head coach sports the new facial hair extremely well and looks like a new man. Is there some way that we can let him know that he needs to keep it around? Maybe it’ll restore the fortunes of UNC on the hardwood as well.
In any case, Roy Williams seems to be dealing with the quarantine (and the down season in Chapel Hill) much like the rest of us are. His beard is proof of that, even if it puts the facial hair that most of us are growing in these times to shame.
