Cleveland Browns: vs. Baltimore Ravens
Sports Illustrated put the Browns on the cover of their NFL preview issue a year ago, boldly declaring that Cleveland would win the NFC North. The Browns epically flopped instead, going just 6-10 and getting Freddy Kitchens fired after just a year on the job.
Kevin Stefanski was hired to succeed Kitchens as the Browns’ head coach in an effort to help Baker Mayfield get back on track. Mayfield, who had looked so dynamic in 2018, took a clear step backward as the offense regressed despite adding Odell Beckham Jr as the team’s new no. 1 receiver.
Despite how bad things got for Cleveland a year ago it is important to note that this is one of the most talented rosters in football. The Browns actually started 2-2 a year ago, with one of those two wins coming in Baltimore against the Ravens in Week 4.
The Ravens never lost again in the regular season after that game, but the Browns can take that performance as a confidence boost heading into the season. Cleveland knows that the path to an AFC North title runs through Baltimore and that they were the only divisional foe the Ravens lost to last season.
Baltimore returned the favor to Cleveland late in the year, blowing out the Browns in Week 16 to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Browns need to find a way to topple the Ravens at home if they want to have any chance of winning the division and hosting a home playoff game for the first time since 1994.
