Asuka and Otis take home WWE Money in the Bank briefcases
Asuka and Otis walked out of WWE Corporate Headquarters with the Money in the Bank briefcases in their arms.
The 2020 edition of the Money in the Bank will be remembered for its zaniness and creativity as the night ended with Asuka and Otis as the winners of guaranteed title shots.
The unique take on the ladder match started as the group of men and women took their starting places in the corporate offices. The bell for both groups rung to start the foolishness and carnage that would ensue. For the next hour fans were treated to a cinematic presentation of two groups of professional wrestlers brawling throughout the WWE corporate offices. There were a variety of segments meant to lean into the loony side of the industry which involved such things as a food fight, slip and fall, bathroom segments and everything in between. By the end of the match viewers saw cameos from Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Paul Heyman, Brother Love and more.
The women reached the roof first and the brawl would continue. Asuka found her way to the top of the ladder, just for Baron Corbin to momentarily interrupt her assent. A few slaps later and Corbin went tumbling to the ground, allowing for Asuka to grab the briefcase to claim the first victory as her own.
The men saw more action on the roof, including Corbin committing apparent murder tossing Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black off the roof. The end came as Corbin and AJ Styles fought on top of the ladder. Elias came out of nowhere, smashed his guitar over Corbin’s back, sending him tumbling to the ground. Styles would grab the briefcase but dropped it, right into the hands of Otis. Otis is now the men’s Money in the Bank winner.
The Universal title match saw some interesting shenanigans as Braun Strowman faced off against Bray Wyatt. No, this was not The Fiend, but instead the “Mr. Rogers-like” version of Wyatt that tries to warn others of The Fiend’s pending doom. Strowman picked up the win in a back and forth match, but the turning point came when Strowman donned the mask of the black sheep, apparently rejoining Wyatt. In the end, it was all a trick as Strowman used it to get his hands-on Wyatt and deliver the powerslam for the finish.
Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre exchanged a lot of hard-hitting offense, but it would be McIntyre who would walk out of the PPV retaining his title. Rollins used the night to debut new theme music, but it would not be enough to inspire him to another championship reign. Both Rollins and McIntyre fired off a lot of big moves in the match and the finishing sequence that led to the Claymore was fantastic. After the pin fall, McIntyre extended his hand and shared a handshake with Rollins in watch seemed to be a show of respect. But we all know how far “respect” goes in the world of professional wrestling.
The intrigue in Money in the Bank is usually around who will walk out of the evening with a guaranteed title shot. Not only was that the story, but WWE featuring the ladder matches at the corporate headquarters was a welcome twist in a time where creativity is needed in entertainment.
