3. World B. Free

The Warriors thought to get younger in 1980 when they dealt former all-star Phil Smith and a first-round pick to the San Diego Clippers for Free. Free averaged 29.4 points per game in the previous two seasons, including 30.2 points per game in 1980. The early-80s Warriors packed quite the scoring punch. But Free had shown he could dish it out (4.3 assists per game) and grab a few boards (3.7 rebounds per game) in 1979.

Less than three weeks later, the Warriors would add King to the fold and establish a prolific scoring duo. Playing next to King meant fewer shots for Free, as he scored six fewer points per game, but he showed that he was more than a pure scorer. Free accounted for a then-career-high 22.1 percent of his team’s assists in 1981 and 21.7 while lowering his usage rate nearly five points from his final season in San Diego.

Unfortunately, the Warriors would win 39 and 45 games in the two seasons with King and Free, missing the postseason each time. Halfway through the 1983 season, Free was sent to Cleveland for Ron Brewer. Most people think of Free, they probably think of him as a Sixer or Clipper and not a Warrior.
