player. Scouting Report. Big Ten. East. Maryland Terrapins. 2. Pick Analysis. 824

Though it is probably the worst situation from a team standpoint, there is a reason behind Tagovailoa potentially heading to College Park to play for the Big Ten’s Maryland Terrapins. While head coach Mike Locksley is one of the worst in the country, he was a former offensive coordinator at Alabama, the one who got the most out of Tua Tagovailoa’s talent in 2018.

While Maryland may never be capable of contending with the likes of Michigan, Ohio State or Penn State in the Big Ten East, it is the flagship school for Under Armour and it’s not like Locksley is going anywhere. You have to remember how toxic this job was after the disaster that was the end of the D.J. Durkin era in Terrapin football. It was such a low entry point, Locksley got the job.

For the failed New Mexico Lobos head coach to even get a second opportunity to lead a Division 1 program again, much less a Power 5 gig, he needed a special player like Tagovailoa and a situation in as dire of straits as Maryland football. While College Park, Maryland and Miami, Florida area in the same time zone, early playing time should be the only reason Tagovailoa becomes a Terp.

Then again, it’s such a low entry point for Tagovailoa, too. He’d have to redshirt and would have a great shot at winning the starting job in 2021. He is a Tagovailoa after all. Locksley will have to win two or fewer games for him to get whacked after only two years on the job. If Tagovailoa becomes the player to make Maryland a bowl-caliber team again, then that would be commendable.
