Snowpiercer’s Jaylin Fletcher chatted with FanSided to tell us what sets the TV series apart from the movie and shares some stories from the set.

A new TV show is pulling up to the station, and it’s all based on Snowpiercer, the 2013 movie from Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. The TNT show centers on lead Daveed Diggs as Andre Layton, a “train tail” passenger who’s part of many who boarded the train without a ticket to seek refuge from the harsh, cold world around them. While nothing is ever perfect on this train that circles the globe, things are shaken up as the tail passengers plan a revolt against the front of the train, and Layton (who leads them) is taken away to solve a suspicious murder in the front.

Joining Diggs in the cast — in addition to Jennifer Connelly — is Jaylin Fletcher, who plays young Miles. Miles is one of the few young people in the tail, and his aspirations to get an apprenticeship in the front leads him to become a valuable asset in the long game.

The series airs on TNT May 17, and ahead of it airing, FanSided caught up with Fletcher via Zoom to chat about his character, his hobbies, and what’s next for the young talent. Watch the trailer for Snowpiercer below, or read on for the Q&A with Fletcher.

FanSidedThank you for taking the time to talk to me today! I wanted to start off by asking what are you doing during this time to stay positive?

Jaylin Fletcher: Playing sports… and video games!

Great! So, for Snowpiercer: How would you describe your character, Miles?

My character, Miles, he’s like a mole on the train, and he’s trying to do everything he can — like, everything in his power, to help his people and the tail section of the train. And so he’s bringing information from the front of the train back to Layton, who’s played by Daveed Diggs, so that they can start a revolution and move upward on the train.

And in trying to get into character, did you do anything unique to prepare to play Miles?

Well [with] my acting coach-slash-manager, we researched trains and engineers, and we did math calculations and created backstories for the characters. And, yeah, I had to imagine what it was like not having parents.

Was it easy to step into that role or did it take a bit of time to get comfortable with being that character?

It took a little bit of time because I had to write everything down that I thought Miles went through before he got on the train and during his lifetime before the show [or] the first episode started.

So you did your homework. I like to hear that! As a side note, I think what’s weird is when I was watching this, I was like: “Wow, they’re all shut in. They can’t go anywhere.” I was like, “How weird is that?” It just feels so timely to today.

That’s people with claustrophobia’s worse fear! Like, being unable to escape. You have to circle the planet forever.

I couldn’t do it! But then, to you, what makes the TV show unique or stand out from the movie?

Well, it has a more detailed plot to it. There is a lot more in the show because the movie is only, like, two hours long, and you can’t fit that much information in. And you build a stronger attachment to the characters. And, yeah, it makes it way more sad if something happens to the characters.

When you were filming, what’s something you’ve learned from someone on set about acting?

Well, Jennifer Connelly, she taught me eye contact is key. I just saw that by watching her. And Daveed, he taught me the balance between fun and work. So we would have fun on set in between takes, but when it was time to work, we get down to business.

Did Daveed break out into song or anything? Just start going full Hamilton?

Yes, it was amazing!

Did you sing along with him?

Yeah! Well, I tried. I didn’t really know any Hamilton songs. But no, I think it was the “Mr. Burr, sir” song.

Okay, so we have to get you brushed up on Hamilton, and then you can audition for it! But back to Snowpiercer, here’s something fun. If you could create one train car on Snowpiercer, what would it be and what could you do there?

It’d probably be like a play-place car. Like, I would have gaming PCs everywhere. And I want to have a ball pit and a trampoline — if it was was big enough, then I would have a trampoline and a ball pit. I would just have gaming stuff everywhere because I’m a big gamer.

Back to the gamin,g then. What other games are you into right now? [We previously had a conversation about Fortnite.]

Hmm… Roblox and Minecraft!

Okay, I’m glad to know that I’m not super old; I know what some of the hip games are! So, thinking toward the future, what are some of your goals moving forward?

One of my goals is to be– I guess, to be rich enough maybe as rich as Jeff Bezos. To actually give homes to all the homeless. And feed all the hungry. And everybody in Africa, Asia, everybody that’s starving.

Wow! And then, in your career, do you have dreams of doing more TV shows or more movies? Maybe star in Hamilton?

I would definitely love to be in a superhero movie or TV show. And be like, the main superhero… I wonder what it would be like.

Are you a Marvel or DC fan — do you like one over the other?

I like both!

I’m definitely a Marvel fan, but I do like both. So if you were cast in any of those, I would be super excited! But lastly, is there anything else you have coming up that you’d like to mention?

Well, I do have this other show that’s gonna be on Netflix. It’s called Clickbait. And it will be out in 2021. Actually, I’m not sure anymore because of COVID-19, but it [should] be out in 2021.

I’m looking forward to seeing that! And before we wrap, did you have anything else to add in general?

Is it okay if I say something to the people?

Go for it!

Always follow your dreams. It doesn’t matter what anybody else says. Opinions don’t matter. And stay positive!
