Kansas City Chiefs: 5 free agents to sign in order to win in 2020
Eric Reid, Safety
The Chiefs could go a different direction in the secondary, adding a safety instead of a cornerback. Safety is not a position of need – but Eric Reid would make an excellent addition.
Bringing in competition would press former fourth-round pick Armani Watts. It would also allow the Chiefs to play veteran Tyrann Mathieu at corner more. And, Reid and Mathieu played together in college at LSU, demonstrating some level of compatibility and familiarity.
Signing a veteran would allow the Chiefs to maximize what they get out of Dan Sorensen by limiting his amount of pass coverage, and would provide an important insurance policy should 2019 rookie standout Juan Thornhill not be fully recovered from his torn ACL.
The Chiefs did not draft anyone to play safety, so making a move here somewhere feels inevitable.
The Carolina Panthers released Reid prior to the draft, and he is still on the market. The seven-year veteran spent only two years in Carolina, after being drafted by San Francisco in 2013. He was a Pro Bowler in 2013 – and while he’s not that player anymore, he still provides a strong, stable presence.
