Scouting Report. National Champions, Sugar Bowl Champions, SEC Champions. No. 1 Coaches, No. 1 AP. player. 814. Pick Analysis. 1980 (12-0). 1

There was no other choice. Until Georgia wins a national title again, the 1980 season will remain the greatest in school history. It not only was an undefeated national championship season, but it gave us the greatest freshman college football has ever seen. Who cares if Johnny Manziel or Jameis Winston won Heismans? There has NEVER been a player like Herschel Walker.

With Buck Belue at quarterback and Scott Woerner in the secondary, Georgia went 12-0 and 6-0 in the SEC to be conference champions, Sugar Bowl champions and national champions. Besides beating No. 7 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl where Walker shoved his dislocated shoulder back into the socket, there are three other unforgettable moments from this season.

The first was Walker’s arrival running over poor Bill Bates en route to pay dirt vs. Tennessee. Later, they’d be Dallas Cowboys teammates. Georgia’s clash with No. 14 South Carolina featured a pair of future Heisman winners. Though George Rogers won the 1980 Heisman, Walker’s Dawgs won the game at Sanford and he took home his own Heisman two years later in 1982.

Then, there’s the greatest play in Georgia history. On a third-and-11 deep in Georgia territory, Belue found wide receiver Lindsay Scott on a 93-yard touchdown pass to help the Dawgs beat Florida in Jacksonville. It was the magical play necessary to help keep Georgia’s perfect season alive. It also gave us the greatest call in the iconic Larry Munson’s radio broadcasting career.
