Quite often, you’ll find Mike Bobo mentioned among the greatest quarterbacks in Georgia football history and, of course, among the legends in Athens. Maybe part of that legend grew out of what he did with the Bulldogs as an assistant coach. But he definitely made his mark as a player, even if it was an up-and-down affair.

Bobo didn’t see the field as a freshman and only played four games as a sophomore. After sitting for the first two years, in his first full season as a starter in 1996, UGA went 5-6. However, he earned his bones the following season. Bobo led the Dawgs to a 10-2 mark and No. 10 ranking as a senior and was one of the driving forces of the offense.

Bobo’s best season statistically only saw him go 199-of-306 for just 2,751 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Yes, this was in the late 1990s and not the 2010s, so you have to take it with a grain of salt. Football simply wasn’t as pass-happy of a game as it now has become at either the college or NFL levels.

Despite only starting two seasons, Bobo ranks seventh at Georgia in career passing yards and sixth in career passing touchdowns. But while he may not belong in the same category as other great quarterbacks in Georgia, his NFL career has even less to speak of. He never played a down at the next level. Instead, his second chapter has come in the college football coaching ranks.
