LSU football: 5 best seasons in program history
By John Buhler
The gap between No. 2 and No. 1 could not be wider. Not only was LSU’s 2019 campaign the greatest in school history, but it’s also right up there among the greatest single seasons in college football history. With quarterback Joe Burrow winning the Heisman and 14 players from this squad getting drafted this past spring, there may not have been a more talented college team ever assembled.
Led by the one-of-a-kind head coach Ed Orgeron, LSU went 15-0 (8-0), dominating seemingly everyone the Tigers came across. Not only did LSU beat seven ranked teams, but at the time of their meetings, all seven of LSU’s opponents were ranked in the top 10. After throttling the Texas A&M Aggies at home to cap off a perfect regular season, what LSU did next was unbelievable.
The Tigers beat three top-four teams in a row to win their fourth national championship in school history. LSU embarrassed No. 4 Georgia in the SEC Championship game. As the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff, the Tigers obliterated the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners in the Peach Bowl. A week later, LSU clobbered the defending national champion No. 3 Clemson Tigers in New Orleans.
Burrow went on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He threw for 60 touchdown passes and nearly 6,000 yards in his redshirt senior season. Orgeron and his staff, headlined by defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger and passing game coordinator Joe Brady, brought the absolute best out of this iconic team.
