Arizona State Sun Devils: FanSided offseason ranking – No. 38

The Arizona State Sun Devils lost a lot this past season from an electric offense. The biggest being wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who broke out thanks to freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels‘ big season. They also lost star running back Eno Benjamin and a good chunk of his offensive line. It’s a lot for head coach Herm Edwards to replace at once, but they have the most important position locked up. Daniels is still here to drive them to new heights.

Daniels is dreaming big. Heisman Trophy winner? Sure, why not. Becoming the No. 1 pick in the draft? People close to him think it could happen. Winning the Pac-12 South? If you listen to the betting odds, the Sun Devils are behind the Utah Utes and USC Trojans. Many have USC making a jump, but they’ve been predicted to do it before and head coach Clay Helton may have the hottest seat in the nation. Utah is expected to take a step back but I don’t know how big a step. That opens up a spot for ASU.

Also, the Sun Devils have a really good defense returning. They only allowed 19.4 points per game last season, and most of the unit returns this season. Former NFL head coach Marvin Lewis was added as the most overqualified co-defensive coordinator in college football.

Then, there are the freshmen they are bringing in. They have eight four-star recruits coming in 2020. Daniyel Ngata should contribute at running back right away. Some others could surprise us, but Edwards has put together a really talented team I expect to sit in the Top 25 for most of the season. Their schedule isn’t terribly easy in terms of the Pac 12, but getting USC early in the season when they could be having issues with Helton may help.
