4. Matthew Stafford

Yes, the Lions were terrible in 2019 but their season only went off the rails after Stafford’s injury. He piloted the team to a respectable 3-4-1 record in his eight starts. Fans around the NFL have forgotten what a good quarterback he can be when he’s healthy.

His individual statistics last year are even more impressive than the team’s record with him in action. Plenty of teams around the league would love to employ a signal caller who threw 19 touchdowns against just five interceptions. Stafford is a quarterback who still knows how to get the ball into the end zone with his wide receivers.

Critics of the former Georgia star will point out that he doesn’t complete an exceptional percentage of his passes. His completion percentage might rise if he were surrounded by better talent. Stafford makes an occasional errant throw, but he more than compensates for those mistakes by making big plays down the field.

The Lions aren’t going to be Super Bowl contenders in 2020, but if Stafford stays healthy they could be one of the most improved teams in the league. That might not be enough to save Matt Patricia’s job but it should be enough to remind folks around the league about just how good Stafford can be.
