G Larry Warford

The New Orleans Saints recently decided to cut Pro Bowl-caliber guard Larry Warford in order to save $7 million against the cap, as Saints general manager Mickey Loomis always has to be proactive about navigating the salary cap with his perennial Super Bowl contending team.

Warford should interest several teams around the league, as he’s right there with Cam Newton and Jadeveon Clowney as one of the best free agents available. The Browns have a great left guard in Joel Bitonio and a standout center in JC Tretter, but they have a hole at right guard with former Buffalo Bills Wyatt Teller penciled in as the starter next to new right tackle Jack Conklin.

Since Warford’s position is at right guard, the Browns could add a standout, powerful run blocker to the mix to help Nick Chubb.

Warford isn’t a slam-dunk signing, despite his pedigree and positional fit. He may not be a schematic fit, depending on the traits Kevin Stefanski and Bill Callahan want in their offensive linemen for their new zone blocking scheme. The Browns will likely prioritize speed and ability in space from their guards as key run blockers in the scheme, and Warford isn’t exactly known for his speed.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t fit the team or wouldn’t be a great signing, especially since cost is no issue for the Browns right now. Depending on what Warford is comfortable with, what the coaching staff is looking for, and what the market dictates his price is, Cleveland could get a star guard at a good value.
