Devonta Freeman would be perfect addition for Seattle Seahawks
By Gino Terrell
Seattle Seahawks need to pick up running back Devonta Freeman, especially since there are concerns Rashaad Penny will miss some playing time.
It’s obvious the Seattle Seahawks need Devonta Freeman.
The Seahawks will need to address their running back situation. Thus far, it seems incumbent starting running back Rashaad Penny won’t be ready to go by week one and could possibly end up on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list for multiple weeks. With the 49ers in their own division, the Seahawks can’t take the chance of being thin at the running back position. They need insurance. Who better to bring in than Freeman?
According to Mike Silver, the Seahawks offered Freeman a one-year deal worth $4 million and the Jets and Eagles are also in pursuit.
The former Florida State Seminole spent six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and had two Pro Bowl seasons. This offseason, Freeman is now on the market as the Falcons have replaced him with Todd Gurley.
Needing a new home, the Seahawks appear to be the best fit. He is coming into a situation where he has the opportunity to be an impact player on a Super Bowl contending team. During Penny’s expected absence, he can prove to be the Seahawks No. 1 backfield option and be the guy even when Penny returns. Freeman’s quickness and ability to find open space just fits what the Seahawks are about.
Pair Freeman with head coach Pete Carroll and this may unleash Freeman’s potential. Very similar to how Marshawn Lynch was key to the Seahawks past playoff success, Freeman can fill a similar void. At age 28, Freeman will have to decide if getting another crack at the Super Bowl is worth sacrificing some dollars.
Freeman can’t be satisfied with the one time he played in the big game he was on the losing end of the biggest Super Bowl comeback in NFL history. He was on a Falcons team that blew a 25-point lead in the Super Bowl LI. Signing with the Seahawks, Freeman may be their missing link to get to the Super Bowl in 2020. It definitely seems worth the gamble for Freeman to sign with the Seahawks.
As for the Seahawks, they know Freeman is coming off back-to-back down years. He battled injuries in 2018 and in 2019 didn’t get the results as years past. Perhaps a change of scenery would get Freeman back to performing the way he did in his prime. But they won’t necessarily need him to be prime Freeman. They just need a solid starter to fill in during Penny’s absence, anything else would be a bonus.
For both parties, it seems coming together is a safe bet. At its best, this could bet a transaction that gets both Freeman and the Seahawks closer to a Super Bowl.
