Joe Burrow earned respect of LSU teammates after brawl at scrimmage
Joe Burrow won over his LSU teammates after standing up for himself after a fight broke out at practice.
It took a little time for Joe Burrow to earn the respect of his LSU teammates. After transferring from Ohio State to LSU two seasons ago, Burrow had to convince his new teammates he was the real deal and worthy of their respect.
According to Brody Miller of The Athletic, Burrow earned the respect of his teammates after he took a hit in practice that led to a mini brawl and Burrow standing up for himself and showing his teammates he’s not to be messed with.
Before Burrow won the Heisman and led LSU to an undefeated national championship season in which he had the greatest season any college football quarterback ever had, Burrow had to prove himself.
As the legend goes, Burrow and the Tigers offense was lighting up the LSU defense in a scrimmage. That didn’t sit well with the proud defense, especially safety JaCoby Stevens who was tired of getting burned.
Stevens came on a blitz and took Burrow to the ground after a particularly nasty hit in practice. Quarterbacks aren’t supposed to be touched, so when Burrow had his helmet knocked off, it lit a fire in the LSU quarterback that his competitive spirit burned as hot as an erupting volcano.
Burrow sprung right up and grabbed Stevens facemask and gave him the business as the rest of the team joined in the scrimmage scuffle.
“Joe didn’t back down, and JaCoby, I think, respected him after that,” one person said.
This is who Burrow is. He doesn’t back down. He doesn’t shy away from this type of stuff. In fact, he lives for it.
After he took a vicious hit in the Fiesta Bowl two seasons ago vs. UCF, Burrow was on his knees for a few moments, but got back up and led LSU to a comeback win over the Knights. That was a sign that Burrow was built differently than most.
It was the moment that led to his historic 2019 season that’ll never be forgotten among LSU fans and what put him in rarified air as a college football legend.
It happened again during the Auburn game when he took a nasty shot near the sideline but he didn’t come out of the game or miss a snap. Burrow is cold-blooded like that. You can’t rattle him. You can’t get in his head. He is unflappable.
It’s traits like that why you can understand how he’s able to play at such a high level and why he was the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s the toughest guy on the field, every time. And it’s why many are expecting Burrow won’t need a whole lot of time to get the Bengals back in postseason contention.
This is what Burrow does.
