Eagles need to sign Devonta Freeman and here’s why
There’s nobody else better
The strongest reason for signing Devonta Freeman isn’t a ringing endorsement of the former Atlanta Falcon, but rather an acknowledgment that while there are legitimate concerns about the back after he averaged a mere 3.6 yards per carry in 2019, he is by far the best option around.
Who else should the Eagles consider signing to bolster their running back depth? Carlos Hyde is too one-dimensional, LeSean McCoy is a reunion not worth pursuing, and Alfred Blue and Theo Riddick are free agents for a reason. (That’s the diplomatic way of saying nobody should sign them.)
Lamar Miller is the only other running back the Eagles should even consider signing, but he’s not as well-rounded or exciting as Freeman. Miller isn’t as valuable on passing downs either, since he’s never caught 50 passes in a season. Meanwhile, Freeman has done this multiple times and could be an important checkdown option in Doug Pederson’s offense whenever he takes the field for Sanders. Furthermore, if there are concerns about Freeman after a serious 2018 injury, Miller has even more concerns after tearing his ACL and MCL in 2019.
After letting Jordan Howard walk, the Eagles have made it clear they don’t just want competent runners. They want running backs who can do it all. That basically leaves Freeman has the best option. Even in a down 2019, he still caught nearly 60 passes, so if that’s what the 28-year-old can do at his worst, the Eagles should be happy with what Freeman could provide as a backup.
