Nebraska football: 5 best seasons in program history
By John Buhler
1995 Nebraska football makes their case as the best college football team.
In the history of college football, Nebraska has two teams that are considered among the team best in the history of the sport. We just touched on the 1971 team led by Bob Devaney, and while that team pulverized the competition, that bunch has largely been lost to time. Though college football has changed a ton since this next team, there is no denying how good the 1995 team was.
Nebraska went 12-0 (7-0) that season, fresh off Osborne’s first national championship as head coach. While that team was perfect too, what separates the 1995 team from the rest is how relentless they were. Nebraska scored 638 points that season while allowing only 174. Talk about total domination. Their average margin of victory was 38.6 points per game. They were ruthless.
In fact, the only time the 1995 Cornhuskers didn’t beat their opponent by at least 20 points was their 14-point victory over the Washington State Cougars. Of the four ranked teams, the Cornhuskers played, all were ranked inside of the top 10 at the time of their meetings. Nebraska pummeled No. 8 Kansas State, No. 7 Colorado and No. 10 Kansas in Big Eight play.
After shutting out the rival Oklahoma Sooners 37-0 in the final game of the Big Eight, Nebraska would face No. 2 Florida in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship. Steve Spurrier’s team was good, but Osborne’s was better, as Frazier and the Cornhuskers crushed the Gators to the tune of 62-24 in the Valley of the Sun. 1995 was Nebraska football at its undeniable zenith.
