Unbreakable baseball records: Stolen base records
Rickey Henderson broke Lou Brock’s stolen base record on May 1, 1991, with his 939th stolen base. He went on to swipe 467 more bags. Rajai Davis’ 415 stolen bases is the most among any active player, and he’s played in 14 seasons. He trails Henderson by 991.
Once again, so you’re telling me there’s a chance…
326 of Henderson’s 1,406 stolen bases came as a Yankee, where he played just 596 games. That was a franchise record, until Derek Jeter finally broke it on May 28, 2011 — his 2,343rd career game. Brett Gardner’s 267 stolen bases — in 1,499 games — are the third-most in franchise history. He hasn’t stolen more than 24 bases in a single season since 2011, when he swiped an American League high 49 bases.
Hugh Nicol swiped 138 bases in 1887, a record Henderson came close to with 130 in 1982. The most stolen bases in a single season since 2010 are 68, by Juan Pierre in 2010. Mallex Smith’s 46 stolen bases led all of baseball last year. The Rangers stole 131 bases as a team last year — the most in all of baseball. In fact, in the last 10 years, just 16 teams stole 139 or more bases.
