Michigan football: 5 best seasons in Wolverines history
Michigan football dominates en route to a national title in 1901.
The 1901 Michigan football team will make you go way back into the college football archives. 1901 sparked a remarkable run that saw the Wolverines win their first-ever national championship but also began a five-year rout of their opponents.
Prior to losing their final game 2-0 in 1905, from 1901-1905, the Wolverines went 55-0-1 and outscored their opponents 2841-40. The Wolverines’ offense was officially dubbed the “Point-a-minute” team.
Now football back in the early 1900s was significantly different than the type of game we see played today. But during this time period, there wasn’t a team out there that could stop the Michigan Wolverines. This team not only kicked off an incredible run during that five-year stretch but also laid the foundations of what would become one of the greatest programs in the history of the sport.
It’s been more than a century since the 1901 Michigan football team made their way into the record books but the standard they set is what Wolverines football players, coaches and fans live by today as the standard set by Fielding Yost’s team at the turn of the 20th Century.
