Parick Mahomes second-best play: The AFC Championship Scramble

So many of Mahomes’ jaw-dropping plays come from a combination of his legs and arm to shake defenses and leave them asking what else could they have done. In the AFC Championship, the Titans did everything in terms of not allowing the arm to beat them, but it was his legs that may have broke their spirit at the end of the first half.

With 23 seconds to go until the end of the half and still down 17-14, the Chiefs were at the Titans’ 27-yard line. Two timeouts and it only being second down gave them downs to play with. Instead, Mahomes was looking downfield for the kill. The Titans had great coverage on the Chiefs’ receivers, leading Mahomes to roll out to his left. With three Titans have a clear shot at Mahomes, it seemed a throw away would be the choice. Mahomes had other plans.

With a head fake, the Titans were off-kilter and allowed a lane on the sideline for Mahomes to take. He ran down the sideline and drove into the middle of the field. At the five-yard line, Mahomes shook off not one, but two defenders before diving into the endzone for a 27-yard touchdown run. It was the moment in the game that most viewers believed it could be over as he scored with seconds left to give the Chiefs the lead and never looked back.

This would mark his second straight comeback in the playoffs. And somehow, neither one would live up to his final comeback in the Super Bowl against the 49ers. With his No. 1 play of the season proving to be the one that changed the game for good.
