Kansas City Chiefs trade: Duke Shelley comes from Chicago

The Chiefs failed to make a significant investment in the cornerback position despite losing starting nickel back Kendall Fuller to free agency, and despite the Breeland’s aforementioned possible absence.

Instead, the team chose to invest heavily at the bottom of the draft, taking L’Jarius Sneed in the fourth round and BoPete Keyes in the seventh round, in addition to signing multiple undrafted free agents who could contribute.

The team will also almost certainly move on from a running back before the season starts. Currently they have Edwards-Helaire, Dam. Williams, Darrel Williams, free-agent signing De’Andre Washington and 2019 draft pick Darwin Thompson under contract. Kansas City is unlikely to carry more than four running backs on the final roster.

The Chicago Bears, however, could use a backup running back they can rely on. David Montgomery is the starter, but Tarik Cohen is more a of a special teams player and scat back at this point in his career. Darrel Williams is consistent, reliable and would be a good depth pickup for Chicago.

Duke Shelley is a potential roster cut for the Bears. The 2019 draft pick failed to show much after a very strong preseason, and the team simply has depth that should beat him out on the roster.

The Chiefs can use all of the competition that they can get for their pending position battle, so swapping a would-be cut for a solid special teamer who could contribute at cornerback could be a win-win. (One could easily put either Williams or Thompson in either of these first two trade scenarios and make it work, too.)
