Tennessee Titans Mount Rushmore: G Mike Munchak

He is better known these days for being one of the best offensive line coaches in the league. But there was a time when guard Mike Munchak was regarded as one of the top performers at his position in the NFL.

The eighth-overall pick back in 1982, the former Penn State Nittany Lion was a model of consistency during his days with the Houston Oilers. He spent 12 seasons with the club and along with fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, the club featured one of the top defensive fronts in the game.

Munchak only played in four games during his rookie season, the strike-shortened ’82 campaign. Over the next 11 seasons, he would start all 16 games six times and was in the opening lineup at least 12 times in each of those 11 years. He would be named to nine Pro Bowls and earn All-Pro honors twice.

Of course, Munchak also spent three seasons as the head coach of the Oilers/turned Tennessee Titans. He compiled a 22-26 mark from 2011-13. But after a 9-7 showing in his first year, there were two straight losing seasons. Regardless, he’s one of the great players in the franchise’s proud history.
