24. War Machine
Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes has flown over 138 combat missions, and every one of them could have been his last before he was suited up to become the Marvel hero, known as War Machine. The former liaison between the military’s Department of Acquisitions and Stark Industries may not have war stories more interesting than some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but that doesn’t mean he should be underestimated by any means.
His Iron Man suit boasts a bit more firepower than his Avenger colleague, and besides the color, the massive Predator-style shoulder gun, help distinguish which one is saving the day.
Rhodey isn’t one to back down from a fight, but he also isn’t one for going in without a plan. Unlike Iron Man, he is much more level headed when it comes to game-time decisions, and his years of military training have resulted in an extraordinary ability for the non-enhanced individual to adapt and overcome almost any scenario. Even after sustaining injuries requiring the assistance of a robotic, leg brace, exoskeleton, the fearless hero traveled back in time and to the far reaches of space, indicating this man is no quitter. Whether he’s soaring through the air as War Machine or rocking the red white and blue as Iron Patriot, Rhodey is a solid player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
