Pedro Martinez pokes Yankees fans with old picture on Twitter
By Mark Powell
Boston Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez is all too familiar with the jeers of the Bronx faithful, and his recent reminder on Twitter will have Yankees fans booing him yet again.
Pedro Martinez has been and always will be a New York Yankees villain.
Heck, he threw a 72-year-old Don Zimmer to the ground for no apparent reason. Martinez has obviously since retired, and serves an an analyst for MLB Network.
Still, even in his days donning a suit and tie rather than Boston red, Yankees fans will let him have it. He didn’t do himself any favors on social media.
Boston Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez riles up Yankee fans on Twitter
Pedro has made a habit of tweeting out some of his favorite baseball memories as we wait for MLB’s return. On Thursday, Martinez delivered a throwback of a previous matchup against ex-Yankees ace Roger Clemens.
Martinez and Clemens had some classic duels in the ’90s and early 2000s, as the Yankees and Red Sox battled for AL supremacy. As one can tell not only from Pedro’s caption, but the fans in attendance, the Bronx faithful gave Martinez all they had, especially in a heated matchup featuring two of the best aces in baseball.
The Hall of Famer is referencing a classic Sunday Night Baseball matchup, in which he out-dueled Clemens through a full nine frames. There have been very few — if any –primetime Sunday night matchups like it since. With both pitchers doing more than enough to secure a victory, it was Martinez’s Red Sox who were able to scratch across two runs against Clemens, and ride their ace to victory.
While some Yankees fans may have chosen to forget, Martinez was more than willing to bring it to the forefront on the game’s 20th anniversary.
