Dodgers disappointment No. 4: 1974 season

Record: 102-60

Playoff Result:

Won NLCS 3-1

Lost WS 4-1

The 1974 Dodgers were the second Dodger team to win 100 games or more since moving from Brooklyn. Los Angeles managed to hold off Cincinnati for the National League West division title. They would defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLCS in four games, en route to the World Series against the Oakland A’s.

The World Series opened up in Southern California, but it was Northern California who struck first. The Dodgers redeemed themselves in Game 2 with a two-run homer from Joe Ferguson and a 3-2 victory. Back home for Game 3, the A’s reversed the result in a 3-2 win of their own to take the series advantage.  With the Dodgers’ backs against the wall, The A’s took Game 4.

Trailing 2-0 in Game 5, the Dodgers scored twice in the sixth inning courtesy of Jimmy Wynn’s sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Steve Garvey. However, the A’s Joe Rudi hit a leadoff home run in the seventh inning. Reliever Rollie Fingers pitched two scoreless innings as the A’s won the series 4-1.

Out of the five games, four of them had a score of 3-2. In all five games of the Fall Classic, the losing team scored two runs.
