4 dream trades for Dallas Cowboys before training camp
3. Trading for Alex Mack
Travis Frederick’s decision to retire was a bitter pill for the Cowboys to swallow. Replacing a high quality starter at center wasn’t something the franchise planned to do this offseason.
That’s why dealing for a veteran center might be appealing to the Dallas coaching staff. Drafting Tyler Biadasz in the fourth round gives the team a nice prospec to develop, but Joe Looney might not hold up as a starter until he’s ready.
The Falcons spent a third-round pick on center Matt Hennessy to anchor the middle of their own offensive line sooner, rather than later. That might make Mack available in a trade this offseason. He isn’t going to turn into a long-term starter for the Cowboys, but he might give them just the veteran boost they need to achieve their goals in 2020.
The fact that 2020 is almost certainly Mack’s last season with the Falcons should push his trade value down considerably. Giving up something in the neighborhood of a fifth round pick to help protect Dak Prescott seems like a wise investment for Dallas. Atlanta might prefer to hang on to Mack at that price, but it’s an offer Dallas needs to make.
