3. Cam Akers, RB, Los Angeles Rams

Akers’ place on this list is rooted in opportunity. Todd Gurley is leaving behind 254 touches in the Rams’ backfield from last year, in a light year for him, and a 71 percent snap share despite that smaller, apparently managed workload. Head coach Sean McVay has said he has three really good backs, as a nod to Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown, but Akers has every opportunity to be a workhorse as the cream will surely rise to the top eventually.

Akers operated behind a Florida State offensive line that was arguably the worst in the country last year, behind only Georgia Tech (who had a coaching/scheme change) as graded by Pro Football Focus. But he averaged 5.0 yards per carry (1,144 yards on 231 carries) with 14 touchdowns, along with 30 catches for 225 yards and four more scores. The Rams’ offensive line fell off last year, but perhaps better health will foster some improvement this year.

A unique offseason without the typical level of work to this point may put Akers at a disadvantage. But running backs are well-positioned to make an immediate impact, and among this year’s class of backs he has one of the clearest paths (if not the clearest path) to significant touches right out of the gate. Talent plus opportunity is in its plainest form here.
