5 teams who should trade for Chris Jones
Indianapolis Colts
Colts head coach Frank Reich has expressed optimism that quarterback Philip Rivers will be with the team for multiple seasons.
However, at 38 years old and on a one-year contract, there is no guarantee that Rivers — who has already agreed to coach high school football in Alabama once his playing career is done — will stick around beyond 2020.
That hastens the need for the Colts to maximize their potential for success while he is on the team.
Having traded a first-round pick for Buckner and signed the All-Pro defensive tackle to a contract worth $21m per season, the Colts — who have over $24m in cap space — may be reticent to commit further financial capital to a player at the same position.
Yet if they believe they are on the cusp of a Super Bowl push, then this is the time to consider parting with a premium draft pick for Jones and risk getting only one season out of him.
Buckner and Jones could cause devastation on the interior when lined up together on pass rush downs and that potential combination is capable of elevating the Colts defense to the elite in 2020.
With Rivers at the helm of a talented offense, an infusion of Jones’ pass-rushing prowess on defense may be enough for a Colts team that beat the Chiefs last season to threaten to go deep into the playoffs.
