Ranking the best Washington football seasons.

Washington football is one of the most consistent and stable programs west of the Mississippi River. Though not a blue blood or a traditional powerhouse in the eyes of most college football fans, it’s impossible to deny that the Huskies have had plenty of success throughout history.

The Washington football team has claimed two national titles, won 742 games all time, won 17 conference championships, played in 39 bowl games, and 307 Huskies have been drafted into the NFL.

That certainly is evidence of a great and successful college football program. And that success hasn’t been seen exclusively in one era or decade, Washington has won plenty of games throughout its history.

That said, most of Washington’s best years have come in recent college football history. And here are the five best seasons the Huskies have ever had:

5. Washington football wins the Orange Bowl in1984.

The 1984 Washington football team was able to start the season with two notable wins over Big Ten teams and then quickly climb to No. 1 in the polls. After a 26-0 shutout win over Northwestern, the No. 16 then went to Ann Arbor to face the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines. Against Michigan, Washington was able to slow the Wolverines offense and snagged a 20-11 win in the process.

That win launched Washington to No. 9 in the country. After beating Houston and Miami (Ohio), the Huskies found themselves at No. 3 in the AP poll. The Huskies then rolled their way through the Pac-10, winning five straight with relative ease and ascending to No. 1 in the poll.

And then an unfortunate trip to USC occurred. Against the No. 14 Trojans, the top-ranked Huskies faltered, losing 16-7, and dropping to No. 8. Washington went on to win the Apple Cup and, in the process, finished the regular season at 10-1.

That loss to USC prevented Washington from being able to win the Pac-10, but the Huskies were still able to get invited to a pretty great bowl game. No. 4 Washington went on to face No. 2 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. In Miami, Washington won 28-17, and the victory catapulted the Huskies to No. 2 in the final AP poll of the season.

An 11-1 season and an Orange Bowl victory helped make the 1984 season a memorable one for Washington.
