4. The hiring of Kevin Stefanski

Some Browns fans might feel it more accurate to label this reason as the firing of Freddie Kitchens. There’s some truth to that line of thinking, but it’s more instructive for Mayfield and his teammates to focus on the positives of their new head coach.

No one knows exactly how Stefanski will work out in his first year as an NFL head coach, but he’s already brought a sense of professionalism to the team. He’s done nothing to inflame any controversies involving his outspoken players this offseason. That alone is a positive signs for Browns fans who grew tired of reading about their favorite stars in the tabloids.

Stefanski should also bring a more structured offensive system for Mayfield to work from. The freedom given to him last season by Kitchens did not translate to wins or personal success for the talented quarterback. That should leave him yearning for direction in 2020.

Perhaps the most important thing Stefanski can do for Mayfield is give him a calm place to turn when things get tough. This season isn’t going to go perfectly for the Browns of their quarterback. Stefanski’s ability to keep Mayfield on an even keel should pay big dividends for Cleveland’s offense.
