Unlike Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers understands the need for social justice.

Elite, white quarterbacks in the NFL are among the most privileged individuals in sports, and many of those players are criticized for not using their privilege in a positive way.

Drew Brees recently provided yet another example of being uneducated about issues in society at a basic level, stating that nationwide protests against police murdering people of color are about disrespecting the flag.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback’s comments came off ignorant, though unsurprising given his past appearance in a video related to being against LGBTQ people.

On the other hand, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers understands the Black Lives Matter movement, making a post on Instagram in which he directly addressed Brees’ comments about the protests.

Colin Kaepernick and players around the NFL, such as fellow former San Francisco 49ers star Eric Reid, have kneeled during the anthem in protest against the brutality toward people of color by police departments across the country.

It’s about basic human rights. Not understanding the movement or the importance of standing together is an example of a failure of leadership at a fundamental level, and it’s a bar that Brees failed to clear.

Saints players are undoubtedly disappointed in Brees, whereas Rodgers’ teammates on the Packers will likely be happy to know where Rodgers stands. Though given the photo above, it’s probably clear they have known he’s capable of doing the bare minimum to show black lives matter to him.
