Browns’ staff has two improvements for Baker Mayfield to make

For the first time in a long time, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield isn’t all talk.

The Cleveland Browns’ 2019 disaster is long behind them, as the most-hyped unit heading into the season failed to reach expectations and then some. They finished in third place in the AFC North behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

Despite providing the Dawg Pound with a glimpse of hope at the end of his rookie season, Oklahoma product and former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield did little to build upon those expectations. Ultimately, he looking lost at times behind a bad offensive line, throwing 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Can Baker Mayfield finally deliver on the hype in Cleveland?

Mayfield’s inability to gain any confidence in the pocket wasn’t lost on his coaches, or even opposing staffs across the league. New Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt already has a few ideas of how Mayfield can improve his mechanics, and in turn deliver the ball at a quicker pace to top targets Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

The Browns offensive line should be vastly improved in 2020, thanks in part to first-round addition Jedrick Wills and free-agent signing Jack Conklin at right tackle. Add in the high-priced tight end Austin Hooper to go with the already-talented David Njoku, and Cleveland’s offense shouldn’t be an issue on Sundays this fall.

Mayfield’s acknowledgment of his past flaws, and inability to take responsibility for his own actions as a professional is a good start. It’s a sign he’s willing to take the necessary steps to refine his craft.

The Browns will only go as far as Mayfield takes them, and it sounds like they already have some idea of how to reach their lofty goals.
