NBA Draft 2020: 5 best fits for Killian Hayes
3. San Antonio Spurs
Rookie point guards need quality coaching to grow into good players. That’s why Hayes landing with arguably the best coach in the NBA would be a great situation for all involved. Gregg Popovich could do a lot with a talent like Hayes.
The Spurs do have a young point guard they already like in of Dejounte Murray, but he’s struggled to really show he is capable of leading a highly efficient offense. That could easily tempt San Antonio to look for a more offensive-minded point guard in this year’s draft.
Hayes would give the Spurs the most natual pick-and-roll player they’ve had since Tony Paker left town. His ability to get downhill with the basketball could help cover up the team’s lack of outside shooting. In particular, Hayes could get DeMar DeRozan more open looks from the wing.
Drafting Hayes might not help the Spurs get back to the top of the Western Conference right away, but he would give the franchise another talented young backcourt player to develop for the future. From the player’s perspective, working with Popovich would represent a great opportunity to obtain a high-level NBA education.
