With Miller Moss, will USC football end up with the next Drew Brees?

USC football got a huge commitment on June 1 from their quarterback of the future, Miller Moss.

He is 6-foot-2 and 197 pounds and the latest big name to commit to the Trojans as a part of their 2021 recruiting class. Moss is the No. 5 pro-style passer, the No. 7 player from California and the No. 52 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Moss is the second quarterback to commit to USC in this recruiting cycle, along with fellow four-star Jake Garcia from La Habra, California. Though Garcia has slightly better overall marks from 247Sports’ composite (No. 4 pro-style, No. 4 California, No. 33 nationally), he’s not drawing the lofty comparisons Moss is.

247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins compares Moss to Drew Brees.

“A pure pocket passer with one of the quickest releases in the country,” wrote Biggins. “A very cerebral quarterback with a great feel for the position. Extremely poised and never looks nervous or hurried. Has an advanced feel for throwing with timing and anticipation. Shows good arm strength and can rip throws through tight windows.”

“Can continue to improve athletically but has good pocket mobility, can move around, buy time and keeps his eyes down the field. Changes speed and throws with touch and is very accurate down the field. Plays with toughness and will stand in the pocket and take a shot to get the ball out. Projects as an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future mid-round NFL draft pick.”

Did USC football land the next Drew Brees in Miller Moss’ commitment?

When anyone compares a quarterback to Brees, it’s usually met with an, “Okay, you’re sure about that?” sort of notion from those who follow the NFL and major college football. People always end up overlooking Brees for what he is, a quarterbacking anomaly. How does a sub-six-foot high school quarterback from Austin star at Purdue and win a Super Bowl with the Saints? He’s special.

That’s not to say Moss can’t be the next great USC quarterback playing in the vein Brees did in college at West Lafayette or professionally in New Orleans, but let’s pump the brakes here a bit, please. Moss joins a program that got absolutely shredded in recruiting last year but is certainly making up for it this spring. 247Sports has the Trojans with the No. 4 class in 2021.

Though a coaching regime change may happen at USC in the next year or so, it’s clearly The Kedon Slovis Show in Los Angeles, with former Trojans quarterbacks J.T. Daniels and Jack Sears transferring to the Georgia Bulldogs and the Boise State Broncos, respectively. Slovis was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2019. He’ll be the starter for two more years before he turns pro.

So the gap between Moss and Slovis is ideal for the next Drew Brees to come in and vie for the starting job in 2022 during his second year at USC. What will be interesting is who ends up winning out in this recruiting class. Will it be Moss or Garcia or someone else entirely? Either way, we have to like what we’re seeing out of USC on the recruiting trail this offseason.

If Moss does become the next Brees, USC benefits greatly.
