8. Indianapolis Colts

One of two teams to miss the playoffs and make the top ten here, the Indianapolis Colts are a dark horse Super Bowl contender. Just a year ago in the preseason, there were high hopes that Indianapolis could be a title threat after a surprise playoff run in 2018.

The sudden retirement of Andrew Luck reset expectations in Indy, but the nucleus of the Colts’ roster remained strong in the course of a hot start. Regression from quarterback Jacoby Brissett and ill-timed injuries sent Indianapolis tumbling down the stretch, setting the stage for a potentially transformative offseason.

GM Chris Ballard made a bold bridge play at quarterback, signing Philip Rivers to a one-year deal to improve the Colts’ chances of winning now. Indianapolis also made good use of their draft capital, flipping their first-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for DeForest Buckner and using their two second-rounders on wide receiver Michael Pittman and running back Jonathan Taylor, adding two more weapons for Rivers.

Those moves fortified a team that already had a tremendous offensive line and a good defense, making the Colts one of the favorites in the AFC South. There isn’t a ton of depth in the AFC behind Kansas City and Baltimore so Indianapolis could be well-positioned to make a Super Bowl push if everything falls into place.
