4. San Francisco 49ers

The runner-ups in Miami in February, the San Francisco 49ers remain a massive threat to win the Super Bowl again this year. The 49ers got to the big game last year on the strength of a power-running game and strong defense, units that remain intact for them in 2020.

One of the big keys to how well San Francisco will do this season is the play of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The easy argument to make about Garoppolo is that he wins all the time, but the 49ers didn’t ask him to do to a ton in the playoffs, a fact that got exposed in the late moments of their loss to Kansas City.

Garoppolo will need to also contend with a brutal division in the NFC West, which might be the toughest group of teams from top-to-bottom in the NFL. An ill-timed slip-up or two in the division could also lead to a tougher Wild Card route through the playoffs for San Francisco.

Another issue the 49ers will have to deal with is the Super Bowl hangover, a plague that seems to negatively impact the loser of the big game the following season. San Francisco has all the talent to ensure that doesn’t happen so don’t be surprised if the 49ers are all set to take another Lombardi Trophy home in 2020.
