Urban Meyer raving about Justin Fields elite throwing should excite Ohio State fans
By John Buhler
Justin Fields’ elite throwing is the quarterback’s separating factor.
Ohio State football fans are going to love to hear what Urban Meyer had to say about the development of quarterback Justin Fields.
The former Ohio State football coach is enamored with Fields’ elite throwing abilities as he continues to develop as a passer.
On Big Noon Kickoff‘s Twitter broadcast Wednesday night, Meyer was asked to pick his top-five quarterbacks entering the 2020 college football season. Though he did pick Trevor Lawrence of the Clemson Tigers over the Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback, Meyer went on to heap a ton of praise on Fields as a passer.
“The one thing I’ll say about Justin [Fields] because I’m very close to the situation, any concerns about him being a throwing quarterback are gone now,” said Meyer. “…I hear the guys talk. I’ve talked to Coach [Ryan] Day, and obviously, the quarterback coach I’m very close to. Comparisons to Dwayne Haskins now as far as throwing the football, which that’s an elite thrower.”
As a true sophomore at Ohio State last season, Fields completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,273 yards, 41 touchdowns and only three interceptions. It came as no surprise when he earned his invitation to the 2019 Heisman Trophy ceremony like Haskins did the year prior at Ohio State. Fields is the better pro prospect, but getting compared to Haskins as a passer is huge praise.
Urban Meyer speaks glowingly about Justin Fields as an elite passer.
Ohio State has a rich history, especially at the quarterback position. However, many great Buckeyes signal-callers have not seen their game translate to the professional level. Haskins is entering year two with the Washington Redskins. It’s a critical year for him, as there is a new regime in town and he needs to prove he’s got the NFL makeup to the new coaching staff.
Though Fields will be a first-round pick like Haskins was in 2018, he is expected to come off the board No. 2 overall in 2021 behind only Lawrence should they both declare a year early for the NFL Draft. While Lawrence might be the second coming of John Elway or Peyton Manning, Fields could end up being a better version of Dak Prescott at the professional level. He can really do it all.
Could a 50-touchdown campaign be in Fields’ football future at Ohio State? If he approaches that, the Buckeyes may end up winning the College Football Playoff in his junior season. They are favored to get to the national title bout to take on Clemson this year. Though the Tigers upended the Buckeyes in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl, here’s to sweet revenge for the Ohio State faithful.
It will be Justin Fields’ passing, and not his running, that will lead Ohio State to the promised land.
