Antoine Griezmann is once again showing interest in playing in MLS.
Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann has once again expressed his ambition to finish his career overseas in MLS.
Griezmann is in the first year of his five-year contract with Barcelona after joining from league rivals Atletico Madrid last summer. The 29-year-old has scored 14 goals in 37 games this season for the current La Liga leaders. He has his sights set on winning multiple trophies with Barcelona but also envisions playing in MLS down the road.
“Winning La Liga and the Champions League with Barca would be a dream, and also my objective,” Griezmann told the Los Angeles Times. “After that winning whatever comes. There’s another World Cup so the World Cup in Qatar. And after that MLS.”
The Frenchman does not have a preferred team to which he would like to join but would simply want to end his career playing in the United States.
“I don’t know with which team, but I really want to play there,” Griezmann continued. “For me it’s an objective to end my career in the United States with the possibility of playing well and being a big part of the team and fighting for a title.”
This is not the first time Griezmann has talked about his desire to play in MLS. In an interview with French publication L’Equipe in 2018, Griezmann alluded to being interested in two particular MLS clubs, including one of the league’s newest teams.
“If he [Beckham] wants me in his club, then I’ll go,” Griezmann said in 2018. “I want to finish my career in the US. I don’t know yet if it’s going to be in Miami or LA. They are two great cities. I like the mentality and the show culture of the United States.”
The league has long been a destination for renowned international players with many current ones eyeing a future there as well. Griezmann’s Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez is among them; he considers MLS an “attractive league” that “any player would be interested in.”
For now, Griezmann and the rest of his Barcelona teammates are preparing for the return of La Liga after a three-month hiatus. The league is set to return next week with Barca’s first game back coming in an away fixture against Mallorca.
