Trevon Grimes will have his breakout season for Florida football.

The 2020 college football season could be one of the best ever for Florida football.

Not since Urban Meyer was coaching the team have the Gators looked this good heading into a season. Dan Mullen has his program poised to make the College Football Playoff for the first time in school history. With consecutive 10-win seasons in The Swamp and a pair of New Year’s Six bowl victories to back it up, Florida is so close to winning the SEC East and playing in Atlanta.

On Wednesday evening, Meyer appeared on Big Noon Kickoff‘s webcast to answer all sorts of questions about the upcoming season. When prompted about which player will become a household name by the end of the year, the first of two mentioned by him was Florida wide receiver Trevon Grimes. Here is what the former Florida head coach had to say about him.

“I went with Trevon Grimes at Florida,” said Meyer. “I think Florida is going to have a heck of a year. If they stay healthy, I’m picking them to be a playoff team. He actually played for me at The Ohio State. A big, tall, legitimate 10.3 100-meter guy, and with the returning quarterback and the returning coaching staff.”

Urban Meyer thinks Trevon Grimes will become a household name in 2020.

Grimes is entering his third year at Florida after spending the 2017 NCAA season playing for Meyer at Ohio State. The Fort Lauderdale native is 6-foot-5 and 214 pounds, getting better in the Florida passing game with each passing season. He is coming off his best college season with 33 catches for 491 yards and three touchdown receptions.

It’s no surprise Grimes had his best college season to date with the best Florida quarterback since Tim Tebow throwing him the ball in Kyle Trask.

Entering 2020, Trask is viewed as one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC, if not the best at this current juncture. Quarterback play has always been Mullen’s coaching speciality, and with that comes improved play by receivers.

It might be Meyer’s personal bias believing this much in one of his former players this much, but we should expect Grimes to shatter his receiving numbers from the previous year in Mullen’s offense. Trask is a Heisman Trophy hopeful. This means he will need to sling the pigskin around the gridiron to big receiving targets like Grimes. Maybe this connection gets Trask to New York?

While the productivity hasn’t honestly been there for him, Grimes has the frame to be viewed as a receiving target comparable to Mike Evans at Texas A&M. Evans caught a ton of passes from Johnny Manziel during their two unforgettable years playing for Kevin Sumlin in College Station. Maybe the Trask-to-Grimes connection yields something as magnificent here in 2020?

Though it is reasonable for Meyer to think this highly of Grimes and believe Florida will be a playoff team, this is all really based on potential rather than production. Trask, Grimes and the rest of Florida football will have to prove it every Saturday this fall on the field. If Grimes does end up becoming a household name, Florida will once again be playing in a major holiday season bowl.

With Trask rifling the football to Grimes, Florida can reach the playoff for the first time ever.
