Patriots best potential QB acquisition is obvious and it’s not Cam Newton

The New England Patriots should trade for Jacoby Brissett, rather than sign Cam Newton. 

Despite NFL pundits clamoring for the Patriots to sign Cam Newton, the pound-for-pound best free agent QB left on the market, they have a better option, and it’s a familiar face.

The Indianapolis Colts are essentially fazing out Jacoby Brissett, as Frank Reich’s team signed Philip Rivers this offseason, and drafted Jacob Eason out of Washington in the middle rounds. The writing is on the wall for Brissett, himself a former Patriot, and he ought to be clamoring for a move back to New England.

Bill Belichick’s current stable of Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham just won’t cut it.

Should the Patriots trade for Jacoby Brissett?

Any trade for Brissett wouldn’t cost New England too much, especially with Colts brass determined to make him feel like a perennial backup.

The NC Sate product is handling the situation with class, which only further proves he’d be a great addition in New England. Brissett only spent one year in Foxborough, but the Patriot Way clearly rubbed off on him.

Brissett’s numbers don’t jump off the page, as his 18;6 touchdown-to-interception ratio was respectable but not nearly enough for a Colts team that had playoff inspirations before the season began.

In New England, Brissett would be surrounded by talent, and would be given the reigns to an offense led by Josh McDaniels and a solid running game featuring Sony Michel and James White. Those same numbers that the Colts evidently deemed insignificant enough to bring in not one, but two potential replacements for Brissett, could very well lead the Patriots to the postseason.

Belichick and Co. are one game manager away from competing with the Bills in the AFC East. Despite their confidence in Stidham, they ought to give him another year to learn the offense. Brissett could easily be their guy, should they choose.
